The designer

Forts in the living room

Ashley DeLapp designs for what happens in a house. Sunday coffee. Kids building forts in the living room while the adults talk. Her studio is three people in Charlotte, and her rooms are collected more than decorated: vintage next to new art, pattern on pattern. In one house the wallpaper went on the ceiling — abstract, pink, over blue walls.

No two clients are alike, she says. So no two homes should be either.

The collection

Magnolias, then dragons.

The list runs magnolias, camellias, dogwood, oaks — the South she grew up in — and then dragons, tigers, plaid, chinoiserie. Gold, pink, lavender, vermillion, mustard, chartreuse. A few fluorescent pops.

She draws her repeats seamless, with no fixed direction. She thinks about ceilings.

Patterns need not have limitations.

The community install

The young adult room

Ashley grew up in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. After college there was no design work in the county, so she left. Her install is going home. The town pointed her to the young adult room at Norris Public Library, and that's where the conversation is now.

Rutherford County is still coming back from Hurricane Helene, two years on. Most of the attention went to Asheville.

The room, the pattern, and the date will be here when they're set.

"I want something better for my hometown."

We're choosing patterns now. Install date to come. Photos and the full story after that.

About the partnership

One of five, this year.

Every year, William Morris Wallpaper invites five independent designers to develop original wallpaper lines under their own names. Every partnership includes an install in a community space the designer chooses. We donate the wallpaper. The designer funds the install. The patterns live alongside our catalogue. The work lives wherever the designer wants it to.
