Choosing from the Hearth & Home collection
Where it works
These five were drawn for the rooms that get muddy boots and breakfast, not the ones kept for best. Woven Check looks like a length of kitchen cloth pinned flat to the plaster, so we'd hang it by the stove or behind a utility-room sink. Indigo Cardinal on flax linen and Bee Meadow on olive-gold suit a bedroom or a study. Coral Thistle, painted in gentle columns on blue-grey, is the gentle one, for a landing or a nursery. Harvest Vine, russet artichokes in a light Arts and Crafts line on cream, works in a dining room or along a hallway.
Picking between the designs
The five sort by how the mark was made. Woven: the check, every square edged with visible stitch. Block-printed: the cardinal, with the roughness of an old textile. Bee Meadow and Harvest Vine are drawn, cream line on olive-gold for the bees and russet on cream for the artichokes. Coral Thistle is the painted one (thistle heads on sage stems, climbing in a loose stripe). None of the grounds shout. Your curtains and the paint on the woodwork get the final say on colour. Pairing two? The check and the cardinal both carry indigo, and Bee Meadow and Harvest Vine share a hand, so we'd put them in rooms next door to each other.
