Green Wallpaper

William Morris drew most of his patterns from leaves and plants, so green carries much of his work. Acanthus, issued in 1875, came in two colourings, one of them all greens, and Willow Bough was inspired by a country walk he took with his daughter May. Our green Morris wallpapers include Willow Bough Green, Acanthus Green, Pimpernel Green, Larkspur Green, Snakeshead Green, Golden Lily Green and Persian Green.

Choosing green wallpaper

Where it works

Sage and olive are the easy greens: they sit behind wood, brass and most paint colours without argument, so Sage Magnolia and Dogwood Branch go into living rooms, bedrooms and halls alike. The dark greens want a room that can take drama. Gold Finches, gold birds and moths on a near-black teal, and Engraved Peony, cream peonies in a charcoal thicket, suit a dining room or a library. Cream-ground designs with green leaves, Citrus Bough or the Morris Fruit Light, keep a kitchen or a north-facing room bright.

Picking between the designs

Green is usually the supporting colour, so decide what it is supporting. Fruit: lemons in Citrus Bough, pale gold pomegranates in Golden Pomegranate, raspberries in Raspberry Thicket. White flowers: magnolia, dogwood, the daisies of Teal Daisy on a mottled plaster ground. Pink flowers: Sage Poppy, where dusty poppies sit inside sage linework with almost no ground showing. Or a proper Morris leaf, where the green is the whole point: Willow Bough Green, Pimpernel Green, Golden Lily Green and Persian Green are all here. If you want green as the ground itself, Sage Damask and Dogwood Branch are the ones where the leaves stop and the wall shows through.
