Choosing tree wallpaper

Where it works

Trees want height, so these designs belong on full walls in rooms with something above eye level: a stairwell, a tall hallway, the head of a bed. Birch Grove, ivory and brown trunks standing close on grey, and Sketched Pines are the settled pair, for a bedroom or a landing. Peony Tree, cobalt trees in fine ink hung with magenta peonies, is for a dining or sitting room that wants a chinoiserie without birds. Leaping Hares, bare trees and hares in lino-cut line, goes in a nursery or a hallway.

Picking between the designs

Decide whether you want the whole tree or just the branch. Whole trees: Birch Grove, Sketched Pines, Pencil Forest, Ash Woodland, Autumn Woods, Palm Cottage with its palms and fruit trees in dusty pink. Branches: Gilded Dogwood with golden leaves on lavender-grey, Sage Dogwood in watercolour on muted sage, Lilac Magnolia, Peony Tree. Whole-tree designs are mostly drawn in one or two colours and read as a forest from across the room; branch designs are painted and read as blossom. Birch Grove is the pick when the wall should look like a place rather than a pattern, since the trunks stand close and the ground barely shows.
