The designer

A farm girl married to a French aristocrat

Courtney Hinton moved to Asheville from Los Angeles with her husband Nick just after they got married. She worked at a design firm for two years, then started Hearth + Home because she wanted to do interiors and antiques in the same place instead of picking one. It was just her until her son Jones was born, and there are four of them now.

Her description of her own style: a Pennsylvania Dutch farm girl married to a French aristocrat, the two of them pioneering out West. That's her line, not ours.

The studio is in one of the oldest buildings in Asheville, twelve-foot ceilings and windows down one side. It's a showroom on weekdays. A good deal of what ends up in her projects comes through that room first.

The collection

Rhododendron tunnels

The collection is in development. Queen Anne's Lace, which grows all over the fields and the sides of the mountains where she lives. Cardinals, the state bird. Spruce and fir.

Rhododendron, drawn from the tunnels of it that run along the Parkway and the hiking trails.

And barn quilts — the painted quilt blocks on the sides of Appalachian barns, turned into repeat.

Earthy browns and mushroom, indigo, forest green, with pops of gold and rust.

Small, medium, and large scales. Each pattern in several colorways, printed on our paste-the-wall non-woven.

Every year, William Morris Wallpaper invites five independent designers to develop original wallpaper lines under their own names. Every partnership includes an install in a community space the designer chooses. We donate the wallpaper. The designer funds the install. The patterns live alongside our catalogue. The work lives wherever the designer wants it to.
