Where it works

Watercolour designs are the softest thing in the range and they belong where pattern is wanted without a hard edge: a nursery, a bedroom, a bathroom, a small sitting room. Aqua Dogwood and Wild Rose, white blossom on brushed blue-aqua grounds, are the bathroom pair. Bumble Magnolia and Lilac Magnolia go into nurseries and bedrooms. Cosmos Splash, fuchsia and marigold cosmos crowding a bright white ground, is the one for a kitchen or a hallway that needs waking up.

Picking between the designs

Start with how wet the paint is. Violet Cosmos and Cosmos Splash are painted with loose, running edges, so the flowers blur into the ground. Aqua Dogwood, Wild Rose and Sage Dogwood are more controlled, brushwork in the ground and clean blossom on top. Lilac Orchard, teal birds and dark red plums on a cracked plaster ground, is the most weathered. Then the ground: white for Cosmos Splash, lilac for Lilac Magnolia and Marbled Violets, periwinkle for Bumble Magnolia, aqua for the dogwoods and roses, sage for Sage Dogwood. Marbled Violets and Lavender Sweep add a thread of gold if you want the paint to catch light. The trout designs, Rainbow Trout and River Trout, are watercolour without any flowers at all.
